Mary’s story

Diagnosed in utero with a heart defect, Mary could not survive birth without treatment. Her family traveled from Chicago to Boston Children’s Hospital for an in utero procedure that restored blood flow to Mary’s heart and safely welcomed her to the world. To her father, her doctors were “creative and courageous”—much like five-year-old Mary now, whose future dreams float from flower arranger to food critic.

Avery’s story

New Hampshire
After five surgeries, Avery’s tiny heart struggled to beat. Boston Children’s Hospital offered her family hope—a brand new process, mitochondrial transplantation, developed by James McCully, PhD. The process restored energy to Avery’s heart and saved her. Now, Avery’s grandma says, “She is the light of my life.”
